Abstract |
The classification of enzymes has been defined by the Enzyme Commission (E.C.), based mainly on the whole chemical structures of the substrates and products, and on the cofactors involved. However, the E.C. classification does not consider protein sequence and structure information, which are extremely important in catalytic mechanisms. To date, numerous enzyme structures have been determined using X-ray crystallography and NMR. Thus, it is high time to start classifying the enzyme catalytic mechanisms based on the structural information.
I have developed a novel enzyme catalytic-mechanism
database, EzCatDB. It is intended to classify them based on structural information of enzymes and ligand molecules, and
proposed mechanisms. |
